The annual Electronic entertainment Expo (E3) started with Microsoft opening the event with one message: it is all about games.
IT’S Fresh off last year’s criticism from hardcore gamers - who complained both Microsoft Xbox, Sony’s PlayStation were becoming too mainstream too overburdened with non-gaming features.
Last year, hardcore gamers complained that Microsoft’s Xbox and Sony’s PlayStation were becoming too mainstream and too overburdened with non-gaming features.
"PS3 had a couple problems when it first came out. It was overpriced. Sony tried to sell it as, ‘It can play blu-ray movies, it’s an all in one system.’ The Xbox One sort of had that same tactic. They also said ‘we’re going to be integrated with your television, you can watch TV. We’re goijng to have the NFL on Xbox One,’ and that sort of distracted from the core message, and the gamers didn’t like that," Gamesbeat Editor in Chief Dan Hsu said.
Microsoft vowed that it will be all about games this year. It is fulfilling that promise with the latest editions of big-name games such as Assassins Creed, Halo, and Call of Duty, newly developed game titles, and more cooperative gaming groups of people playing with, rather than against each other.
"There’s actually a lot of cooperative games. There’s Evolve, for example, which is a new game where you have 4 people on the same team. These guys are hunters, and you have a fifth player who plays a giant monster. So it’s this asymmetrical semi-cooperative game where four people are working together to take down one powerful player. Cooperative is a bit more friendly for gamers in general because you work together with people, versus a really competitive, mean environment," Hsu said.
