Pakistani Prime Minister, Nawaz Sharif, will attend the swearing-in ceremony of the Indian Prime Minister-designate, Narendra Modi.
The Prime Minister’s office says Sharif congratulated Modi on his party’s victory in the general election. Sharif will attend Modi’s swearing-in along with other South Asian leaders. The attendance will be a first in the history of the nuclear-armed rivals. The two countries have fought three wars since their independence from Britain in 1947.
Bilateral ties have been particularly tense since the 2008 Mumbai attacks, which were blamed on Pakistan-based militants. But Sharif has said he wants to improve relations with India.
