Monday marks the 20th anniversary of the genocide in Rwanda. Starting today, the country will hold 100 days of official commemoration activities.
Photographs of people who were killed during the 1994 genocide are seen inside the Kigali Genocide Memorial Museum.
Hundreds of people have already attended a Mass in the Rwandan capital, Kigali, ahead of the official mourning. The country’s culture minister says the activities are to show the Rwandan people’s determination not to repeat the tragedy and their resolve to strengthen their unity.
A Three day International Conference has also been held in the capital to reflect on the tragedy. More than 200 people from around the world attended the meeting.
At least 800 thousand people - mostly ethnic Tutsis and moderate Hutus - died at the hands of Hutu extremists in 1994.
Most of the victims of the genocide were attacked during 100 days of slaughter that began on April 6th, 1994. It came shortly after Hutu president Juvenal Habyarimana was killed when his plane was shot down over the Rwandan capital.
