Two statues depicting sex slaves from twentieth century wartime have been erected near the entrance to Seoul National University.
One of them portrays a girl dressed in traditional Korean clothing, the other in typical Chinese attire. Artists from South Korea and China designed them respectively.
Thousands of women were forced into sexual slavery by the Imperial Japanese Army in occupied territories before and during World War II. Many who survived the war are still demanding an apology from the Japanese government.
The statues are meant to commemorate those who suffered both mentally and physically from their ordeals. Several other similar portrayals have been erected across the world.
