A top European Union official has held talks with officials of a Turkey-Syria border city to discuss the ongoing refugee crisis.
European Enlargement Commissioner Johannes Hahn visited Gaziantep, near the Syrian border, and met with the city’s officials. One of those he met was the mayor of the city, who said the EU had avoided the refugee problem until it had reached its doorstep.
Hahn said the EU has asked the Turkish government several times about financial support to help cope with the influx of refugees.
Last month, the EU warned Turkey to dramatically cut the number of migrants reaching Greece within weeks or the pressure for more border closures and fences would grow. Hahn said he has no doubt that Turkey could do more.
