"That’s one small step for man, one giant leap for mankind." Those are the famous words of Neil Armstrong, 45 years ago today, as he became the first man to set foot on the moon.

On July 20th, 1969, Apollo 11 became the first manned spacecraft to make a moon landing. On board the American flight were Commander Neil Armstrong and two pilots, Buzz Aldrin and Michael Collins.

The crew spent four days in space before Armstrong stepped onto the moon with Aldrin following. The two spent over 21 hours on the lunar surface before the flight returned to the US. NASA estimates 530 million people worldwide watched the historic landing.
