The mystery over what happened to Malaysia Airlines flight MH370 remains as deep as ever. There’s been no sign of the plane, despite months of intense searching in the Southern Indian Ocean. Now, the families of seven of the passengers who were on board the plane have received advanced compensation from the airline. They’ll each get 50,000 U.S. dollars.

Three months since flight MH370 disappeared and multinational searches have failed to turn up any trace of the Boeing 777, attention is focusing more towards the issue of compensation, as the Malaysian government continues to coordinate the search and response.

At a press conference on Thursday, Malaysian Deputy Foreign Minister Hamzah Zainuddin said seven claimants, including six Malaysians and one Chinese have each received 50,000 U.S. dollars in advanced compensation.

"For the Chinese, one has already received our advanced payment now. Forty are in the process, because they are waiting to confirm verification from the government of China to get the identification," Zainuddin said.

This is just an initial payment. Families will have to wait for the full amount. Zainuddin says that can’t be paid until there’s a conclusive and final verdict on the fate of flight MH370.

"Whether the plane is found, or we announce the plane is lost. There will be a time that we will announce certain issues," Zainuddin said.

For now, the search for the missing flight is far from being over. Technical data suggests it crashed in the southern Indian Ocean. But a seabed search has found no trace of any wreckage.

Some relatives are refusing to accept the official version of events, and continue to hope their loved ones are still alive. Many say it’s still too early to discuss compensation until the plane is finally located.
