China makes breakthrough with semiconductor chip

Computing research has taken a quantum leap at the university of science and technology of China. Its Quantum Laboratory has developed a semiconductor quantum chip.

The chip is considered the "brain" of a future quantum computer.  The chip means the logical operations and information processing can be achieved.  Still to be developed are the storage and manipulation technology.

Experts predict that within a decade or so, it will be possible to create a special quantum computer or quantum simulator.  The computing power will be 10 billion times faster than that of a conventional computer.

"Quantum computing is an innovation. After the technology's successful development, first, it can decode all the open passwords. Second, it can solve many problems in big data, which have not been solved before. For example, in the fields of medicine manufacturing , health examination and national defense,"said professor Guo Guangcan, University of Science and Technology of China.
