Cui Tiankai weighs in on Korean Peninsula situation

China's Ambassador to the US, Cui Tiankai, is in town for the political season. CCTV NEWS host Tian Wei has had an exclusive interview with him.

In 2006, Cui was assistant Foreign Minister, and served as China's chief negotiator to the Six-Party Talks. He went over the history of those talks, as well as the current situation on the Peninsula, and shared China's stand on the DPRK nuclear issue.

Q1: China and US were among those that agreed with resolution and the UN and also with the harder sanctions this time against DPRK. Has China's position changed when you were talking to your American counterparts. What were their reactions to the recent China's agreement with US on this issue?

A1: China has consistent position, latest UN resolution was adopted unanimously, which means all members including China and the US support the resolution, support imposing new sanctions. Dialogue and negotiations is the only way out. China would do everything possible to restart negotiations, to make real progress towards the goals of denuclearization and stability and peace.

Q2: What kind of negotiation are we talking about? Six-party talks or fewer than that, or what ....restart the negotiation?"

A2: Well, the fact is the six party talks did play an important role over the years. For instance back in the year 2005....We are still working very hard together with other parties try to restart, or resume this negotiation process.
