Chile's National Seismological center has upgraded the magnitude of the quake offshore to 8.3.
The quake struck Tuesday evening at 8:46 local time in the Pacific Ocean off Chile's northern region, generating a tsunami. Local authorities ordered evacuation of coastal areas before the tsunami hit. A tsunami warning was issued for all of South and central America's Pacific coast, including Peru, Ecuador, Colombia and Panama.
The tsunami wave activity is measured as high as 2 meters. Chile's navy says the tsunami has hit some areas in the north of the country. The National emergency office says there were initial reports of landslides partially blocking some roads and highways. The tremor also shook buildings in parts of neighboring Bolivia and Peru.
The U.S. Geological survey says the quake was very shallow, only 10 kilometers below the seabed. It was centered 86 kilometers northwest of Chile's main mining export port Iquique. Chile’s interior minister says there are no injuries or serious damage to houses.
