The International Day for the Eradication of Poverty is on Monday, October 17th -- which happens to be the 3rd poverty relief day in China this year.
The Chinese government plans to achieve this by 2020, and it made a big statement last year when it reportedly reduced the number of people living in poverty by about 15 million.
1.3 million of these came from south-west China's Guizhou province -- which has a population of about 35 million.
Twenty-one provinces in China have counties below the poverty line, which means the average annual salary of its population is below 2,300 yuan.
The provinces of Yunnan, Shaanxi, Guizhou, and Gansu, as well as the Tibet Autonomous Region have the most pressing poverty concerns.
However, the Chinese government is planning to spend up to 100 billion yuan to eradicate poverty across the country by 2020.
