16 people are dead after a military aircraft carrying senior officials crashed on Saturday morning. only one person survived.

High-ranking officials confirmed dead include the Minister of Defense, the Minister of Public Security, the head of the ruling party’s central Committee Secretariat and the Mayor of Vientiane. The sole survivor was a nurse. She was pulled from the wreckage along with two others who later succumbed to their injuries. Mourning for the dead began in the Lao capital on Saturday evening. The officials on board the aircraft were on their way to an event to commemorate the creation of the Lao army’s 2nd Division. A witness said the plane crashed in a mountainous area in the north of Laos, and the weather was clear at the time of the accident.
