The agency said the capital Tokyo had received 17 centimeters of snow on Saturday alone. Some 600 scheduled flights at the Tokyo International Airport were forced to be canceled, leaving about 70-thousand passengers stranded. A record amount of snow has also been dumped in the cities of Saitama, Nara, Nagoya and Osaka.
Meanwhile, Kofu City in Yamanashi Prefecture has seen its heaviest snowfall in 120 years, logging 49 centimeters so far this year. A nationwide alert has been issued, warning people to take precautionary measures when they are outdoors. The national weather agency also said rainstorms may hit Tokyo and nearby areas even after the snow ends.
