China blasts US show 'to militarize' the sea
Chinese Defense Ministry spokesman Yang Yujun has blasted the US warship's foray as "a show of military force intended to militarize" the South China Sea.
He said China and other countries in the region are negotiating a code of conduct concerning the South China Sea, and all parties have expressed willingness to safeguard peace in the region.
He pointed out the US -- a party not involved in the local disputes over maritime sovereignty -- sent a warship there to threaten China's national security, and severely undermine the stability of the region.
Yang denied that China's activity in the South China Sea will restrict freedom of navigation and overflight, citing many vessels of many nationalities sailing through every day.
The spokesman noted the Amercian move threatened the safety of staff on both sides, and is likely to trigger unexpected incidents. He urged the US to respect Chinese concerns, and to solve divergences in light of the principles of no conflict, no confrontation, mutual respect and win-win cooperation.
The spokesman also warned that China will take any measures necessary to safeguard its security.
