US: Storm causes 9 deaths, brings snow up to 60 cm
A winter storm has slammed into the northeast United States, dumping snow up to 60 centimetres of snow on some areas. The storm has been blamed for nine deaths.
Snow has tapered off across much of the region by midday, but dangerous cold is expected to linger into Saturday. The storm began rolling in Thursday, and has brought the temperature plummeting as low as minus 23 Celsius, the lowest seen in decades. Hundreds of schools have been shut down in Boston and New York.
Thousands of flights are cancelled or delayed. The governors of New York and New Jersey declared states of emergency, urging residents to stay at home, both for their own safety and to keep roads clear for snow removal.
