British Prime Minister Theresa May called for a snap election with the aim of bolstering her majority in parliament ahead of crucial Brexit talks.

Her gamble backfired, with voters taking away the Conservative Party’s majority during the vote this month.

Saruhan Hatipoglu, a global economics analyst, said the election result means the UK is now negotiating its divorce with the European Union from a position of weakness, not strength.

The so-called “hard Brexit” that May’s camp wanted is now less likely, Hatipoglu said.
